5 out of 5 stars ant farm   August 29, 2010
Andrew C. Patz
We purchased this farm on a whim for our daughters 6th birthday. Fortunately for us it only took two days to arrive and it made it in time for her party. We chose to get our own ants from the yard. Our kids loved insects and collecting ants proved to be the best part of the whole experience. Getting the ants into the farm was the most challenging part of it. They are fast little buggers -- now try putting 10 - 15 ants together, and they want to go every which direction!! I would suggest when you transfer them from the container that you collect them in into the farm that you do it OUTSIDE so that when they escape, they wont be running all over your house! Adding more ants is even more challenging. When you take the cover off, they all want to escape. My only wish with the farm would be a trap door or something easier to add ants. It takes several batches ants for them to dig long, decent tunnels. The container itself is very durable and has withstood several falls off the cupboard. Overall, I would recommend this product. It is very interesting to watch them dig -- even for the adults.

4 out of 5 stars Cool New Substrate Makes Ant Farm More Interesting.   August 15, 2010
Vito J. LaBella (Brooklyn, New York United States)
Hey, it is an ant farm; not much to screw up! It is an improved version of the old sand types using a "space age" gel. It works as advertised. The gel, and the LCD lights shining up from the bottom, giving off a blue glow, make the whole thing look pretty cool.

The one caveat is that the ants must be purchased separately. They are not expensive, five bucks for fifty ants. My problem is, they won't sell a queen. So, you can't really observe all of the ant type behaviors.

After the original ants die (in about three months) I guess you could try to collect ants in the wild. That would require more research. Overall, a great investment. The kids love to watch them and by doing research and learning about the ants together, it makes for an educational and bonding experience.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful (if you like ants)   June 14, 2010
Lew Craig (Payson, AZ, USA)
I bought this little ant farm not expecting too much. It came quickly and I ordered ants which came in about 4-5 days. I followed the directions by refrigerating the ants for 10 min. then dumped the ants into the "farm." The ants ran around like chickens with their heads cut off for half a day. When I work up the next morning, the ants had dug a tunnel and were starting to go horizontal. The genius of this is that the gel is clear, so you can see everything the ants do. Now, about five days later, the ants have totally excavated the entire gel, just like you see in the pictures. It is fascinating and my grandchildren went nuts over it. My wife, who wasn't excited about having ants in the house, loves it.

I have heard that some people have had ants arrive dead. When they first arrived, I thought some were dead, but they all eventually started moving around. I had the ants sent to my PO box so they wouldn't be exposed to a hot mail box (I live in Arizona). So far, the ants are doing great.

I wish the farm was larger, maybe twice as big, but I am surprised at how fascinating they are even in this small farm. This has been educational and great fun. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!!   June 13, 2010

I got the ant farm for my 5 year old step-daughter last Christmas. She is facinated with bugs and anything and everything that has to do with them. This is a truly an amazing and educational item!!! My step-daughter loves it and so do I!!!!

5 out of 5 stars I love it more than my son!   May 29, 2010

This is an awesome product. The ants are busy and the tunnels look so cool in the gel. My 2-year old can pick it up without disturbing them too much. It comes with a little magnifying glass so you can really see how they chew up the gel and make the tunnels. I would recommend buying the ants directly from the Lifeworks website instead of using the order form, then popping them in the fridge for a few minutes to slow them down before you put them in. After that you only need to crack it open once a week or so to give them air, but they seem to go to sleep in the evenings so I don't worry about them escaping. It is really a fascinating toy!
